NDE1070: The Science of Reading Pathway: Vocabulary Microcredential (Early Childhood and Elementary Teachers, Licensed Personnel)

Vocabulary refers to the body of words and their meanings that students must understand to make sense of written texts. This includes both receptive vocabulary, words students recognize and understand when they hear or read them; and expressive vocabulary; words they can use accurately in speaking and writing. Vocabulary development is a foundational part of learning to read with understanding. When taught intentionally and supported through exposure to rich language, students build the word knowledge they need to become confident, capable readers. This microcredential focuses on vocabulary acquisition as an essential component of the reading process.
