NDE1037: NEPF Instructional Practice/ Evaluator Microcredential 1/5: IP Standard 1

This microcredential focuses on the evaluation of educators implementing NEPF Teacher Instructional Practice Standard (IPS) 1 - New Learning is Connected to Prior Learning and Experience.  When we present students with new information, their prior knowledge and experiences influence their thinking, and “each student might understand what we say in slightly different ways – attending to different aspects of the question, interpreting and responding differently to the learning environment, etc. – all of which significantly affects their abilities to solve the problems we present, to reason, and to acquire new knowledge (Wenk, 2017). Teachers must activate all students’ initial understandings of new concepts and skills, make connections explicit between previous learning and new concepts and skills, make clear the relevance and purpose of learning, and provide students opportunities to build on or challenge initial understandings. Administrators must reinforce the professional growth of their teachers by providing measurable feedback and supporting teacher reflection and growth.
