NDE1005: Disciplinary Literacy Pathway: Disciplinary Writing Microcredential
Self-paced
Full course description
This course is appropriate for teachers and licensed personnel who work with students grades 5 - 12 and Adult Education.
Writing is an essential part of literacy, no matter the subject. In order to help students achieve academic growth, teachers must support students in learning how to write using methods specific to their disciplines. For example, scientists write primarily to share scientific information with other scientists to help further exploration of a hypothesis or to share outcomes of a scientific study. Historians often write to provide factual information on historical events. While these examples are general in nature, they illuminate the importance of writing in the style of the key discipline in order to achieve desired outcomes for the writer and the reader. Educators who support writing literacy in their disciplines teach writing practices that address the specific text types common in their discipline, and they support the writing process to allow students to maximize their understanding of how to share their learning through writing. This microcredential focuses on how educators implement writing instruction that is specific to their discipline to help students learn new material and deepen their understanding of learned content.
