NDE1004: Disciplinary Literacy Pathway: Disciplinary Reading Microcredential
Self-paced
Full course description
This course is appropriate for teachers and licensed personnel who work with students grades 5 - 12 and Adult Education.
Reading is an essential part of literacy, no matter the subject. In order to help students achieve academic growth, teachers must support students in learning how to read and interpret text using methods specific to their disciplines. For example, scientists read scientific text for information to support or refute a hypothesis, and mathematicians read mathematical text to learn how calculations work in order to apply that understanding to other mathematical problems. While these examples are general in nature, they illuminate the importance of reading in the style of the discipline being studied. Educators who support reading literacy in their disciplines teach reading practices that address the specific text types common in their discipline. This microcredential focuses on how educators implement reading instruction that is specific to their discipline to help students learn new material and deepen their understanding of previously learned content.
